HC Deb 16 May 1996 vol 277 c531W
Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to his answer of 22 April,Official Report, column 24, how many children have been admitted to (a) NHS psychiatric care and (b) non-NHS psychiatric care for each year since 1979; and how many children have been detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 or other provision for each year since 1979. [29478]

Mr. Bowis

I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave him on 22 April,Official Report, column 24, for the information on children admitted to national health service psychiatric care. Information on the number of children admitted to registered private mental hospitals and nursing homes is not recorded centrally. The number of children detained for psychiatric care under the Mental Health Act 1983 and other provisions is not identifiable separately in the information available centrally.

Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients undergoing a mental health review tribunal under mental health legislation have been refused discharge on the ground of inadequate and inappropriate provision in the community, for each year since 1979. [29404]

Mr. Bowis

This information is not held centrally. Such grounds are not part of the criteria in sections 72 and 73 of the Mental Health Act 1983 but discharge can be delayed until a care plan under the care programme approach is in place.
