HC Deb 15 May 1996 vol 277 cc444-5W
Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many approved driving instructors have been found to be in groups 5 and 6 following assessment by the Driving Standards Agency. [29545]

Mr. Norris

As at the end of March 1996, the figures were:

  • Grade 5: 12,748
  • Grade 6: 2,288.

Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what procedures his Department has in place to monitor the training of large goods vehicle and passenger-carrying vehicle driving instructors. [29537]

Mr. Norris

The Driving Standards Agency is working with representatives in the road haulage and training industries to produce a voluntary register of LGV driving instructors. Matters such as entrance exams and check tests, and how such a register should be administered, are currently being considered. It is hoped to introduce the register in spring 1997.
