§ Mr. Gwilym JonesThe Government are considering the possibility of selective culling to accelerate the decline in the number of BSE cases occurring in the future. Any such cull would have to lead to a genuine reduction in the future incidence of BSE if it was to be worth doing. The aim would be to target cattle most at risk of developing 239W BSE. A final decision on whether to take this approach will be made in the context of negotiations on lifting the current European Union ban on the export of British beef.
