HC Deb 08 May 1996 vol 277 c156W
Mr. Mullin

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many Metropolitan police officers were(a) prosecuted and (b) disciplined in each of the last five years arising from cases where awards of damages or out-of-court settlements had been made; and in cases where officers were disciplined what form the discipline took. [27154]

Mr. Maclean

The figures given are for cases where disciplinary action was taken and where the civil action or settlement was over £10.000. The figures for 1991 and 1992 do not include cases where informal disciplinary action only was taken.

Year Cases Action Penalty
1992 Case 1 1 officer Substantiated by Police Complaint Authority Tribunal Reprimanded
Case 2 7 officers Formal discipline Dismissed
Case 3 1 officer Formal discipline following a criminal conviction Dismissed
1 officer Informal discipline Words of advice following an acquittal
1 officer Informal discipline Word of advice
1993 Case 1 1 officer Formal discipline Fined
1 officer Formal discipline Cautioned
1994 Case 1 1 officer Informal discipline Admonished/ words of advice

1995 Case 1 3 officers Informal discipline Strictly admonished
1 officer No action as he had already left the service
Case 2 2 officers Acquitted of criminal charges Not yet settled

In addition there were two further cases which, although it cannot be confirmed from the available information, appear to relate to civil actions involving payments of over £10,000. Each case involved an officer who was subject to informal discipline and given words of advice or admonished.
