HC Deb 07 May 1996 vol 277 c1W
Sir Ivan Lawrence

To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department on how many occasions since 1990 persons convicted of crime have subsequently been successful in claiming damages from the victim of that crime for the offender's loss and personal injury; and if he will make a statement about eligibility for legal aid in bringing such claims. [27389]

Mr. Jonathan Evans

Figures about such claims are not held centrally and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

Civil legal aid may be available to an individual wishing to bring such a claim through the courts of England and Wales, subject to the standard tests on the merits of the case and financial eligibility.
