§ Mr. Arbuthnot[holding answer 21 March 1996]: The total value of contracts placed with (a) American and (b) British-based firms in 1994–95 and 1995–96 is as follows:
£ million Financial year 1994–95 American 1,261 British 6,163 Financial year 1995–96, to date American 387 British 5,847 The values are the total of the prices agreed for the contracts placed. The value and location of sub-contract work has not been taken into account. However, as the Statement of Defence Estimates 1995, chapter 5, figure 13 indicates, some 91 per cent. of our equipment expenditure goes to UK industry.
