HC Deb 18 March 1996 vol 274 c88W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what steps are being taken by his Department to discourage the use of private cars in town and city centres; and if he will make a statement. [20651]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

It is for local authorities to determine the traffic management strategy most appropriate to their area, having regard to local circumstances. The Government's role is to set the framework, through the publication of advice and guidance, including advice on traffic restraint measures. The Government encourage people to travel by means other than the private car-cycling, walking and public transport-where that option is open to them.
