§ Mrs. BrowningThe welfare of calves at slaughter is protected by the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations 1995 (SI 1995 No. 731). The permitted methods of slaughter are stunning, by use of a captive bolt, concussion stunner or by electronarcosis—electrical stunning—which must be followed, without delay, by bleeding or pithing. The regulations lay down specific requirements for these operations. Slaughter of surplus calves under the calf processing aid scheme must take place in a licensed slaughterhouse registered under the scheme and under the supervision of the Meat Hygiene Service. An official veterinary surgeon must be at the premises when calves are handled.
