§ Mr. SproatI am pleased to announce that, at a meeting of the Privy Council on 23 July, Her Majesty the Queen approved the grant of charters establishing the English and United Kingdom sports councils. The new charters will come into effect later in the summer and the sports councils will be fully operational on the new basis after the summer break.
The Secretary of State for National Heritage intends to appoint up to five ministerial nominees in each region of the English Sports Council to promote the development and practice of sport in those regions. Further nominees will be announced in due course, drawing on suggestions from the sector. For the present the Secretary of State proposes to appoint the following persons and designate them under provision in the new charter to work alongside the English Sports Council:
