HC Deb 24 July 1996 vol 282 cc454-5W
Ms Glenda Jackson

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will list the number of traffic violations involving cars of the ministerial fleet, the nature of the violations, and the total amount of fines arising from those violations, in each year since 1986. [39297]

Mr. Freeman

Responsibility for the subject of this question has been delegated under the terms of the framework document to the Security Facilities Executive. I have asked its chief executive, Mr. John King, to write to the hon. Member.

Letter from J. C. King to Ms Glenda Jackson, dated 23 July 1996: The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster has asked me to respond to your Questions about the Government Car Service (GCS). As Chief Executive of the Security Facilities Executive, I have operational responsibility for the GCS. GCS Drivers are responsible for driving safely and responsibly. With the exception of parking offences, they meet the cost of any fines for motoring offences from their own pockets, and we do not keep details. Our records show that the Government Car Service covered the cost of the following parking violations from 1986:

Year Total Total cost (£)
1986 282 2,820
1987 98 1,116
1988 238 2,856
1989 90 1,080
1990 125 1,500
1991 37 666
1992 43 1.075
1993 33 990
1994 17 510
1995 35 1,050
1996 (to date) 8 240
These costs cover the whole of the Government Car Service, including the Ministerial vehicles. It would, however, be disproportionately costly to disaggregate this information by customer.
