HC Deb 24 July 1996 vol 282 c541W
Lady Olga Maitland

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the effect of his policies for the economy on levels of inward investment. [37684]

Mrs. Angela Knight

The Government's economic policies have helped the UK to attract more inward direct investment, in relation to GDP, than any other major economy, with over £20 billion in 1995 alone. In 1995–96, the Invest in Britain bureau was notified of 477 inward investment projects, creating almost 50,000 new jobs and safeguarding as many again. This strong performance is being maintained this year, with LG of Korea announcing £1.7 billion investment in south Wales, creating 6,100 new jobs—the largest inward investment ever made in Europe.
