HC Deb 24 July 1996 vol 282 cc540-1W
Mr. Ian Bruce

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the change in the average domestic electricity bill since the industry was privatised; and how the privatisation has affected Government revenues. [37682]

Mr. Jack

The typical UK household electricity bill has fallen by £18 between 1990 and 1995, in real terms excluding VAT. On top of this, bills will fall by about a fifth this year. Privatising the electricity industry has contributed over £20 billion to Government revenues, and the privatised companies now contribute about £1 billion in corporation tax each year.
