HC Deb 24 July 1996 vol 282 cc371-2W
Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what estimate he has made of the extent to which driver fatigue was a significant contributory factor among(a) heavy goods drivers and (b) public service vehicles in the cause of road accidents involving (i) fatal, (ii) serious and (iii) slight injuries. [38201]

Mr. Bowis

A recent survey of heavy goods vehicle and car drivers found that tiredness was a principal factor in around 10 per cent. of accidents. The survey did not cover public service vehicle drivers. The survey included both damage-only and injury accidents. The number of fatal and serious accidents was too small to draw separate conclusions about.
