HC Deb 24 July 1996 vol 282 cc406-7W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the cottage hospitals which have been closed in Wales since 1979; and if he will make a statement. [39091]

Mr. Hague

Hospitals which have been closed since 1979 and were not district general or psychiatric hospitals are given in the following list. The list excludes St. Lawrence hospital, Chepstow and Talgarn miners rehabilitation hospital which were not classed as cottage hospitals. During the same period six cottage hospitals have opened.

The NHS in Wales is treating more patients than ever. Since 1979 the number of in-patients and day cases admitted to hospitals has nearly doubled and the number of new out-patients seen has increased by about 50 per cent.
