To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, pursuant to his oral answer of 15 July to the hon. Member for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney, (Mr. Rowlands)Official Report, column 776, what are the private finance initiatives which will allow his Department to make greater investments in education. [38885]

We have announced radical measures to help local authorities harness private sector finance and management expertise and I refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for Croydon, North-East (Mr. Congdon) on 21 May 1996 by my hon. Friend, the Minister of State for the Environment,Official Report, column 164.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list each project currently under consideration through the private finance initiative, indicating the value in each case. [38874]

Mr. Jones

Projects being looked at currently by the Welsh Office, which have been made public, and their estimated capital value are as followsA55 Anglesey (£125 million); M4 relief road (£375 million); A465 heads of the valleys road (£175 million); Easter Bay link of the Cardiff peripheral distributor road (£108 million); Bute avenue, Cardiff (£50 million); North Meirionnydd/East Dwyfor community hospital (£7 million); University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff (£21 million); staff residential accommodation, district general hospital, Llantrisant (£4.5 million); day surgery unit, Nevill hall, Abergavenny (£1.8 million); mental health development, Nevill hall, Abergavenny (£6 million); community hospital, Chepstow (£5 million); replacement of radiotherapy equipment, Velindre (£4 million); new general hospital at Baglan (£63 million).

Information on schemes costing less than £1 million is not collected.
