To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what assessment he has made of the relative public examination results performance of(a) grant-maintained and (b) locally managed schools. [38882]

School performance tables covering the results of grant and locally maintained schools are published annually. The record of the former is pleasing: for example in 1994–5, 46 per cent. of 15-year-olds achieved five GCSE A*C, compared with 40 per cent. in locally maintained secondary schools.
