HC Deb 22 July 1996 vol 282 c11W
Mr. Robert Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what plans exist to improve the approach road to London from Heathrow along the M4 and beyond; and if he will instigate a competition to(a) design landscaping on embankments, (b) improve central reservations and (c) site sculptural works so as to give a better impression to visitors and the pubic. [38422]

Mr. Watts

I have asked the chief executive of the Highways Agency to write to my hon. Friend.

Letter from Lawrie Haynes to Mr. Robert Banks, dated 22 July 1996:

The Secretary of State for Transport has asked me to reply to your recent question about visually improving the M4 and A4 from Heathrow.

In accordance with the Green Corridor Study completed last year, and the Landscape Strategy for London's Trunk Roads launched at the end of last year, proposals are now being developed for the M4 and surrounding area in London. Consideration will be given during this work to opportunities for individual design competitions.

Much good work has already been completed on the A4, including significant tree planting and three improvement schemes to provide new hardened central reserves and ornate guardrailing between Hammersmith Flyover and Chiswick Roundabout. A fourth scheme, to provide similar treatment from Gliddon Road to North End Road, is planned for September this year.
