To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department in each of the past five years how many people have presented claims for asylum to a British embassy or high commission; and what the number of such claims has been by country of origin of the claimant. [38195]

[holding answer 18 July 1996]: Aggregate information on the number of claims for asylum made at British embassies or high commissions is not available. However, details of applications made at specific British high commissions is given in explanatory note 14 of the Home Office statistical bulletin "Asylum Statistics United Kingdom, 1995", issue 9/96, a copy of which is in the Library.
