To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the (i) speeches, (ii) reports and (iii) other statements made by the Director General of Gas Supply in relation to her statutory duties concerning the environment. [36627]

Under section 4 (2) of the Gas Act 1986 as substituted by section 1 of the Gas Act 1995, the Director General of Gas Supply has a dutyto promote efficiency and economy on the part of persons authorised by or under this Part to carry on any activities, and the efficient use of gas conveyed through pipes".

She also has a duty to take into account, when exercising all the functions in section 4 (2) of the Act, as similarly substituted, the effect on the environment (whether by pollution or otherwise) of activities connected with the conveyance of gas through pipes.

The implementation of those duties is a matter for the Director General of Gas Supply.
