Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information his Department has received concerning the numbers of those injured during the alleged police attack on the funeral procession of Mr. Baburam Shegdem on 21 June; what representations he has made to ensure that the injured received appropriate medical treatment; and if he will make a statement. According to reports received by our high commission in New Delhi, around 100 people were injured during Mr. Shegdem's funeral procession on 21 June. We have raised the case with the Indian National Human Rights Commission.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information has been evaluated by his Department about the circumstances and causes of the reported death in custody in India of Mr. Baburam Shegdem; what representations he has made to the Indian Government about the subsequent events at the funeral of Mr. Shegdem; and if he will make a statement. Our high commission in New Delhi has received reports that Mr. Shegdem was among a number of Bhutanese detainees who were allegedly beaten in prison on 3 June. Mr. Shegdem was admitted to hospital on 11 June and died the following day. We have raised the case with the Indian National Human Rights Commission.
