HC Deb 08 July 1996 vol 281 c2W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a further statement on the human rights of Bhutanese refugees in Nepal. [35769]

Mr. Hanley

We believe that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is in the best position to monitor the situation. We continue to encourage the Governments of Nepal and Bhutan to resolve the underlying problems through bilateral negotiation. We have contributed over £475,000 through non-governmental organisations over the past three years to support the refugees in Nepal.

Mr. Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent consultations he has had with the Appeal Movement Co-ordination Council about the situation of Bhutanese refugees in Nepal and India. [35772]

Mr. Hanley

The Appeal Movement Co-ordination Council full committee called on the British embassy in Kathmandu on 7 May. It provides us regularly with reports of its activities in Nepal and India.
