Sir John Gorst

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Harrow, East (Mr. Dykes) of 1 July,Official Report, columns 338–39, what was the outcome of the meeting of the doctors' working group that met on Thursday 4 July to discuss matters relating to the accident and emergency department at Edgware hospital; and if he will make a statement. [35831]

Mr. Dorrell

As part of the process to which I referred in reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Harrow, East (Mr. Dykes) on 1 July at columns338–39, the working group met on Thursday 4 July to finalise its recommendations to Barnet health authority about medical input to the casualty service at Edgware hospital. The working group has endorsed the principle that there should be a medical presence within the casualty service. This helpful recommendation, which reflects the local opinions that have been voiced over many months by my hon. Friends and others, will be considered by Barnet health authority at its next meeting.
