HC Deb 15 January 1996 vol 269 cc357-62W
Miss Lestor

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list(a) the amount of grants to NGOs from the ODA and (b) the amount of UK aid money disbursed through NGOs in the last year for which figures are available. [8946]

Mr. Hanley

All expenditure from the ODA to non-governmental organisations, NGOs, is provided on a grant basis. The sum of all grants for 1994–95 made by the Overseas Development Administration to United Kingdom NGOs for work in developing countries was £173,124,136, as detailed in the table. The comparable figure in 1992–93 was £141,791,127. in 1993–94 it was £148,610,155.

In addition, we made grants to United Kingdom NGOs for work in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union—in 1994–95 amounting to £11,989,655. The comparable figure in 1992–93 was £5,634,899; in 1993–94 it was £9,839,600.

United Kingdom NGOs also draw substantially on European Community aid programmes to which we contribute.

The table provides details of all ODA grants in 1994–95.
