To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the total value of contracts awarded to GEC by the Overseas Development Administration in each year since 1990. [8237]

The only relevant contracts awarded since 1990 are two contracts, one to the value of £450,000 awarded in 1991, and a second worth £494,974 in 1992 to separate companies owned jointly by GEC and Alcatel Alsthom of France.

The ODA has financed several contracts between GEC or its subsidiary companies and overseas clients. Since 1990, we have supported a number of such contracts, including in 1993 and 1994 grants to finance two power projects in India totalling £81.8 million and in 1995 a grant of £15.516 million for a power project in Indonesia.
