HC Deb 09 January 1996 vol 269 c41W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has to introduce a nationwide information system to assist the public in travel planning. [8264]

Mr. Norris

Transport operators are better placed than Government to provide travel information. A number of nationwide travel planning systems are being developed, including the Great Britain bus timetable prepared by Southern Vectis, to which the Department of Transport contributed funds; the telephone hotline also run by Southern Vectis; and the national train information system planned by the British Railways Board as part of the BR/Railtrack informed traveller project.
