HC Deb 09 January 1996 vol 269 cc42-3W
Mr. Williams Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many mobile telephones have been supplied to his Department in each of the last eight years; and in each of those years how many different suppliers were involved. [8037]

Mr. Norris

The numbers of mobile telephones purchased by the Department and the suppliers used in each of the last eight years were as follows:

and motive power on the Midland Main Line in each of the last five years. [7354]

Mr. Watts

As Midland Main Line has existed as a discrete organisation only since 1 April 1994 the information is not available in the form requested. However, over the last five years, around £6 billion has been invested in the railway industry of which around £1.26 billion has been spent on new and improved passenger rolling stock.

Mr. Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) how much has been invested on track maintenance on the Midland Main Line between London and Nottingham in each of the last five years; [7353]

(2) how much has been invested on signal maintenance on the Midland Main Line between London and Nottingham for each of the last five years. [7354]

Mr. Watts

The information requested, in respect of each of the last three years, is in the table.

£million
Track maintenance/renewals Signal maintenance/renewals
1993–94 14 million 2.7 million
1994–95 16 million 3.1 million
1995–96 15.7 million 2.4 million

Comparable figures are not available before 1993–94, when Railtrack was formed as a separate division of the British Railways Board.

Mr. Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many occasions, in each of the last five years, there have been delays on the Midland Main Line between Nottingham and London because of(a) signal failure, (b) track failure and (c) train failure. [7352]

Mr. Watts

This information is not held centrally. It would be disproportionately expensive to try to compile it.

Mr. Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport in how many reported incidents employees have been injured in each of the past five years on the Midland Main Line. [7348]

Mr. Watts

The Health and Safety Executive's railway inspectorate is unable to supply figures for incidents of injuries to employees on the Midland Main Line over the past five years, because accident statistics are not collated on this basis. Since 1 April 1994, accident statistics have been collated on the basis of Railtrack zones, rather than on the previous basis of British Rail regions.

Mr. Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport in how many reported incidents safety regulations have been breached in each of the past five years on the Midland Main Line. [7349]

Mr. Watts

The Health and Safety Executive's railway inspectorate is unable to supply figures for incidents of breaches of safety regulations on any specific railway line over the past five years, because accident statistics are not collated on this basis. Since 1 April 1994, accident statistics have been collated on the basis of Railtrack zones, rather than on the previous basis of British Rail regions.

Mr. Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport who has held responsibility for health and safety on the Midland Main Line for the past five years. [7350]

Mr. Watts

The British Railways Board was responsible for the health and safety on the Midland Main Line until 31 March 1994. Since that date, responsibility has rested with Railtrack midland zone and Midland Main Line operating unit.
