To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what measures his Department has adopted to combat(a) drugs abuse and (b) substance abuse. [17379]

A Welsh office consultation paper "Forward Together" which sets out a strategy for tackling drug and alcohol misuse in Wales was launched on 16 October 1995. This paper sets out the measures to be adopted to combat the misuse of drugs and other substances in Wales including the establishment of a new Welsh drug and alcohol unit. The intention is to publish the final strategy document in spring 1996.

I have also announced our intention to reconstitute the Welsh Committee on Drug and Alcohol Misuse. Membership of the committee will be announced in the coming weeks.
