HC Deb 22 February 1996 vol 272 cc235-6W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he next expects to meet signatory nations to the Antarctic treaty concerning the establishment and siting of the secretariat; and if he will make a statement. [15935]

Mr. David Davis

There are no immediate plans for Ministers to meet Antarctic treaty signatories to discuss this issue. The Antarctic treaty secretariat will be the subject of discussion at official level at the forthcoming Antarctic treaty consultative meeting in the Netherlands on 29 April to 10 May.

Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has recently held with the Argentine Foreign Minister concerning the siting of the secretariat to the Antarctic treaty; and if he will make a statement. [15936]

Mr. Davis

The siting of the Antarctic treaty secretariat was raised by the Argentine Foreign Minster during bilateral meetings on 15 December 1995 and on 30 January 1996. He was informed that our position remained unchanged.
