The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Questions about the cost of prison places during the first six months of the current financial year.The annualised costs of a place in each establishment are set out in the attached table.The annualised average cost of a prison place in the first six months of the current financial year was £23,190. Spending, however, is not spread evenly across the year, and the additional funds provided this year to meet the rise in the population is not yet reflected in these half year figures.731W
