To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the number of prisoners sharing three to a cell designed for one in each month this year. [9104]

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. George Howarth, dated 18 December 1996: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the number of prisoners sharing three to a cell designed for one this year. No prisoners have been required to share three to a cell designed for one this year. There have been no prisoners held three to a cell designed for one since March 1994.
