asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, at the current Intergovernmental Conference, they will table an amendment to Article A of the Treaty of Rome to remove the words "an ever closer union among the peoples of Europe" and to replace them with "a partnership of nations".

The Government fully share the treaty aspiration for strengthened co-operation and friendship across the whole of Europe, represented by the treaty reference to "an ever closer union among the peoples of Europe", (not, let it be noted, among the states of Europe or their governments).
