As Peter Mathison is on leave at present, the Secretary of State for Social Security has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Questions asking what are the number of young people claiming severe hardship payments currently (a) nationally, (b) in London, (c) in Waltham Forest, (d) in Redbridge and (e) in Leyton.The information is not available in the form requested. Statistics are not kept for specific geographical areas, but for Benefits Agency (BA) Districts.The number of young people who claimed severe hardship in November 1995 nationally, England, Scotland and Wales, was 9977. The number claiming in the BA Districts which include the London postal area was 571. However this will include some claims from people living outside London, see Annex. The number claiming from Lea Roding District was 60. The Lea Roding District comprises of Ilford, Leytonstone and Walthamstow offices, which includes Waltham Forest, Redbridge and Leyton.
