§ Mr. BayleyTo ask the Secretary of State for Health how much money was spent on furniture, fixtures and fittings by the Yorkshire regional health authority in each year since 1986; how these assets were disposed of; and how much money was raised for the NHS from their sale. [24972]
§ Mr. MaloneI refer the hon. Member to the reply that I gave him on 29 January, column 528, which included the total spending on repair, maintenance and upgrading of the headquarters premises of the former Yorkshire regional health authority by year since 1986. The figures included expenditure on fixtures, fittings and furniture. It is not possible to identify expenditure separately under these headings as the definitions of fixtures, fittings and building fabric are not distinct, and no attempt was made to differentiate between them at the time the work was carried out.
Because of the merger and then abolition of the former regional health authorities, some furniture and equipment did become surplus to requirements in Northern and Yorkshire. Any reusable items have been passed on to national health service trusts and health authorities in the area which could make use of them. Some unusable and obsolete furniture and equipment was sold, and produced £38,000 for NHS use.
§ Mr. BayleyTo ask the Secretary of State for Health how much money was spent on furniture, fixtures and fittings by the Northern regional health authority in each year since 1986; how these assets were disposed of; and how much money was raised for the NHS from their sale. [24967]
§ Mr. MaloneI refer the hon. Member to the reply that I gave him on 12 February, columns456–57, which included the total spending on repair, maintenance and upgrading of the headquarters premises of the former 483W Northern regional health authority since 1986, including expenditure on fixtures, fittings and furniture. It is not possible to identify expenditure separately under these headings.
Because of the merger and then abolition of former regional health authorities, some furniture and equipment did become surplus to requirements in Northern and Yorkshire. All items proved suitable for reuse, and have been passed on the national health service trusts and health authorities in the area.
§ Mr. BayleyTo ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the total cost of furnishing, fitting out and decorating the board room at the Yorkshire regional health authority headquarters at Park parade, Harrogate; and how much of the cost has been recouped from the sale of surplus assets. [24973]
§ Mr. MaloneWork on the board room was carried out as part of the refurbishment of the Queen building at Park parade, Harrogate. I refer the hon. Member to the reply that I gave on 29 January, column528 in respect of overall expenditure on repair, maintenance and upgrading work on the Park parade site by year. It is not possible to identify separately expenditure either on a specific area of the building or on a particular sub-category of the work.
I refer the hon. Member to the replies I gave him today for information regarding the disposal process for any assets surplus to requirements following the merger and then abolition of regional health authorities. Any reusable assets have been passed to national health service trusts and health authorities in the area which could make use of them. Some obsolete and unusable items were sold,

§ Mr. BayleyTo ask the Secretary of State for Health how much money(a) has been spent and (b) will be spent on furniture, fixtures and fittings for the new Northern and Yorkshire regional offices of the NHS executive at Mountjoy science park. [24971]
§ Mr. MaloneIt is not possible to differentiate expenditure on fixtures and fittings from that on building fabric. I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave him on 1 February at columns919–20 for information on the total expenditure on the Durham offices of the national health service executive, Northern and Yorkshire, including fixtures and fittings.
Total expenditure on furniture amounts to £2,000 for some smaller filing cabinets, necessary because of the reduced provision of space in the new accommodation compared with the former offices. All other furniture will be taken from that previously in use in the former Harrogate and Newcastle offices.
