Under the Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments Act 1953 and the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, the Department gives grant for the repair of buildings of outstanding historic or architectural interest and for works which enhance conservation areas. The number of buildings currently being assisted under these provisions isGwynedd: 51 Clwyd: 69 Wales: 353

The heritage lottery fund is currently contributing towards the cost of repairing 22 historic buildings in Wales, one each in Clwyd and Gwynedd.

Local authorities are empowered to grant aid historic buildings but information on this assistance is not held centrally, nor is information on buildings of historical importance which are being renovated without grant aid.
