To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much money his Department allocated as provision for the payments of potential compensation claims in each of the last five years. [37776]

[holding answer 19 October 1995]: This information is not readily available for 1990–91, but financial provision for payment of compensation claims from 1991–92 onwards was as follows:

1991–92 £10 million (estimated)
1992–93 £11 million
1993–94 £26 million (of which £15 million was provision made for compensation payments made to Servicewomen dismissed on grounds of pregnancy)
1994–95 £43 million (of which £26 million was provision made for compensation payments made to Servicewomen dismissed on grounds of pregnancy)
