To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, pursuant to his answer of 24 October,Official Report, column 573, relating to payments for capital works at grant-maintained schools, if he will list for each capital scheme the length of time between the presentation of contractors' bills, the issue of architects' certificates and the payments of the bills. [40656]

Mr. Richards

No central record is kept of when contractors' bills are paid on capital works carried out at grant-maintained schools, as responsibility for this rests with the individual school governing body concerned.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the dates on which architects' certificates have been issued in respect of capital works carried out at Brynmawr grant-maintained school and the dates on which payments have been made in respect of these architects' certificates. [40652]

Mr. Richards

Responsibility for payments on architects' certificates in respect of capital works at Brynmawr grant-maintained school rests with the school's governing body. No record is kept centrally. The dates on which architects' certificates, known to the Department, were issued for each of the four named capital projects carried out at Brynmawr school since it became grant-maintained are as follows:

  • Certificate No. 2: 15 September 1993

Costelow and Sons Ltd. and payment for their work at Brynmawr grant-maintained school. [40655]

Mr. Richards

I understand that T. Costelow and Sons Ltd. is a sub-contractor on two named capital projects at Brynmawr grant-maintained school. Responsibility for the payment of sub-contractor work rests with the main contractor.
