HC Deb 30 October 1995 vol 265 c30W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what evidence he has to show whether a minority of cars emit a majority of pollution; and what proposals he has to resolve the problem. [39901]

Mr. Norris

I refer the hon. Member to the answers I gave to the hon. Member for Stretford (Mr. Lloyd) on 18 July at column1016 and 16 October at column 89.

Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what impact vehicle pollution has on drivers inside their vehicles; and if he will make a statement. [39906]

Mr. Norris

There is no evidence to suggest that the health of drivers is subject to any greater degree of risk as a result of pollution inside their vehicles than that to which the public at large are exposed.

Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what advice his Department offers to motorists buying a new car on the relative health benefits and disbenefits of diesel and petrol cars. [39888]

Mr. Norris

At the moment the Government neither recommend nor discourage the purchase and use of diesel or petrol cars on environmental or health grounds. This policy will be reviewed and updated, as necessary, in the light of medical evidence as to the health effects of these fuels.
