To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what methods English Nature uses to calculate the numbers of sites of special scientific interest damaged in England each year. [39241]

English Nature's fourth annual report, a copy of which is in the Library, sets out its methods. The report also confirms that the categories of damage to SSSIs in England are based on the "Common Standards for Monitoring" report by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (1993).
