HC Deb 27 October 1995 vol 264 c826W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps are being taken to monitor(a) mine water pollution and (b) methane emissions from abandoned mine workings in South Yorkshire. [39033]

Mr. Clappison

The answers are as follows:

(a) Mine Water pollution

The Coal Authority monitors mine water levels at 11 sites in south Yorkshire, and the National Rivers Authority monitors mine water discharges. The two authorities are working together closely, in the light of results from monitoring, to develop a clearer understanding of the mine water situation in the area and a strategy for the prevention of future problems.

(b) Methane emissions

The Coal Authority carries out regular monitoring for methane at 15 sites in south Yorkshire. It is also working with Rotherham and Barnsley borough councils to monitor and address methane problems in these areas.

Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list all test bore holes sunk in south Yorkshire in each year since 1990 to monitor mine water flows. [39034]

Mr. Clappison

Neither the National Rivers Authority nor the Coal Authority is aware of any test bore holes sunk in south Yorkshire since 1990 specifically for the monitoring of mine water flows. However, a number of mine shafts and boreholes sunk for other purposes in the past are used by the Coal Authority to monitor the mine water situation.
