Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many teachers retired from the profession in' the most recent year for which figures are available; and what proportion of them had reached statutory retirement age. [39116]

Mr. Robin Squire

A total of 21,254 teachers started to draw a pension in 1994–95. Of these, 5,814 were aged 60 or more, the age at which they may retire and receive their pension of their own accord.
