Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the purposes for which project licences have been approved by the Animal Procedures Committee in relation to tobacco in the last five years.[335]

Mr. Kirkhope

The following project licences have been granted:

  • 1991: none
  • 1992: (i) the development of in vitro methods to monitor the genetic damage caused in humans by environmental pollutants; and (ii) the use of tobacco smoke as one experimental tool to study lung disease.
  • 1993: none.
  • 1994: none.
  • 1995:
    1. (i) the evaluation of the role of bacterial toxins in sudden infant death syndrome; and
    2. (ii) the investigation of the role of bacterial toxins in periodontal disease.

It is the practice of the Animal Procedures Committee to set out in its annual reports details of all such applications considered.
