HC Deb 22 November 1995 vol 267 c222W
Mr. George Howarth

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners are undergoing parole delays; how long, on average, these delays take; what is the percentage of accepted parole applications; and what is the cost per week per inmate undergoing parole delays. [39]

Miss Widdecombe

For the period August to October 1995, some 800 prisoners were notified of parole decisions after their parole eligibility date or its anniversary. The average delay was just over seven weeks, 46 per cent. of all applications for parole were accepted.

The cost of keeping an inmate in prison varies between establishments. The average cost per inmate per week in category C accommodation is currently about £378.
