§ Ms Janet AndersonTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what was the most recent date when chimpanzees were used in a UK facility designated under the Animals Scientific Procedures Act 1986; [144]
(2) what plans he has to ban the use of chimpanzees in research and testing in the UK; and if he will make a statement. [143]
§ Mr. KirkhopeNone have been used under the Act in any designated establishment.
We have no plans to ban the use of chimpanzees in research and testing in the United Kingdom. Any application to use chimpanzees in a procedure requiring to be licensed under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 would be considered in accordance with the requirements of section 5 of the Act, and also referred to the Animal Procedures Committee for advice. Exceptional and specific justification would have to be established to show why chimpanzees, rather than any other protected species, were required.
