To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what rates of duty in pence per litre are charged on aviation gasoline and aviation kerosene in each of the 15 countries within the European Union; and how many litres of each fuel are consumed in the United Kingdom. [1499]

Aviation gasoline used by commercial and private aircraft is subject to excise duty at the rate of 18.07p per litre in the UK. No information is available about the rates of duty charged on aviation gasoline in other EU member states.

Aviation kerosene used by commercial aircraft is subject to the nil rate of excise duty in all the European Union member states. Aviation kerosene used by private aircraft is subject to a nil rate of duty in the UK; no information is available about the rates of duty charged in other EU member states on aviation kerosene used by private aircraft.

Some 39,179,000 litres of aviation gasoline and 9,257,964,000 litres of aviation kerosene were delivered for consumption in the UK in 1994.
