Mr. Rowlands

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security (1) what estimate he has made of the number of visually impaired people who were refused attendance allowances in 1993, 1994 and 1995 to the latest available date; [42090]

(2) what estimate he has made of the number of visually impaired people who were refused the middle rate care component of the disability living allowance in 1993, 1994 and 1995 to the latest available date. [42091]

Mr. Andrew Mitchell

The information requested is not available. A claim for disability living allowance or attendance allowance is a claim for the benefit and not for a particular component or rate. Statistics about the disabling condition of claimants refused benefit are not routinely collected.
