HC Deb 07 November 1995 vol 265 cc720-1W
Mr. Barry Field

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what part the British Academy of Sport will be playing in the furtherance of sailing for the blind and sailing for disabled people; and when she expects to make an announcement on plans for disabled sports men and women. [41593]

Mr. Sproat

The precise functions of the British Academy of Sport will not be decided until the Sports Council's consultation is completed and bids to establish it are invited. The Government have no plans to make an announcement on disabled sports men and women, though we expect that the measures and recommendations announced in the sports policy statement, "Sport: Raising the Game", which the Government published on 14 July, will be interpreted and adapted for all sportsmen and women, regardless of their individual circumstances.

Mr. Field

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage how many medals(a) able-bodied and (b) disabled British sailing sports men and women have won in the last four years. [41592]

Mr. Sproat

I understand from the Royal Yachting Association that British crews have won a total of 18 medals in International Yacht Racing Union sanctioned world championships in the last four years, and one medal at the 1992 Olympic games. In the same period, disabled British sailors have won a total of five medals in their respective world championships and the 1992 Paralympics.

Mr. Field

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what proportion of British athletes took medals at(a) the last Olympic games and (b) the last Paralympic games. [41591]

Mr. Sproat

A total of 45 British competitors from a team of 389 won medals in 20 events at the 1992 Olympic games; 83 from a team of 205 won 128 medals at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics; and 26 from a team of 93 won 11 medals at the 1992 Madrid Paralympics.
