§ Mr. WattsWe are developing a number of proposals for repeal or deregulatory amendment which we hope to bring forward this year. These include: abolition of the requirement for local authorities to use type approved parking equipment; liberalising signing for tourist attractions; amendments to regulations concerning cycle racing on the highways; the updating and consolidation of navigation and collision regulations for merchant shipping.
The requirement to carry out a compliance cost assessment applies to regulations which impose additional burdens on business while the programme of repeals and amendments is concerned with reducing the burden.
§ Mr. SteenTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the estimated savings to the Exchequer by the repeal of each rule and regulation which has so far been the subject of a reference to the Deregulation Committee from his Department; and in how many cases a compliance cost assessment has been carried out.
