HC Deb 03 November 1995 vol 265 c515W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list for each of the last five years the budget for his departmental expenditure and the percentage of gross domestic product spent on transport. [40994]

Mr. Norris

The information required on departmental expenditure can be found in the relevant "Financial Statement and Budget Report".

Gross domestic product is a measure of output while much transport expenditure is intermediate. Total transport expenditure is thus not calculated as a component of GDP. However, a separate exercise has estimated total expenditure on transport including intermediate expenditure. The estimated expenditures expressed as a percentage of GDP, at market prices, for 1990 to 1994, are as follows:

  • 1990: 18 Per cent.
  • 1991: 17 Per cent.
  • 1992: 18 Per cent.
  • 1993: 18 Per cent.
  • 1994: 17 Per cent.
