§ Mr. David NicholsonTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the number of persons over retirement age who paid income tax in the latest financial year for which figures are available; and how many were liable to pay more than £500 in income tax. [40706]
§ Mr. JackIt is estimated that in 1995–96 there will be around 10 million people aged 65 or over, about 3 million of whom will pay income tax. Personal allowances available to people aged 65 or over ensure that only 1.8 million will be liable to pay more than £500 in income tax.
