HC Deb 25 May 1995 vol 260 c693W
Mr. David Shaw

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many qualified information technology teachers there were in secondary schools in each year since 1979; and what proportion of the total number of teachers in this subject they represent. [25772]

Mr. Robin Squire

The information requested is available only for 1984, 1988 and 1992 from the secondary school staffing surveys. In those years, the number of full-time teachers who were teaching information technology, including computer studies, in maintained secondary schools in England and who had a post A-level qualification in information technology was as follows:

Year Number of IT teachers (000) Number with an IT qualification (000) Percentage with qualification
1984 9.4 2.3 24
1988 12.1 3.1 26
1992 10.4 2.8 27

The total number of full-time teachers with an information technology qualification, including those not teaching IT, in each year was:

Year All teachers with an IT qualification (000)
1984 4.1
1988 6.4
1992 7.1

It should be noted that the definition of information technology has changed slightly over the years, so the figures quoted may not be strictly comparable.
